Softball Drops Pair of Games in Day One at Maryland Tournament

Bearcats blanked 6-0 by No. 12 James Madison, nipped 5-4 by host Terps

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Binghamton softball team (3-10) dropped two games in the opening day of the Maryland Tournament. The Bearcats were shut out 6-0 by No. 12 James Madison (22-3) and lost a 5-4 walk off decision to the host Terps (5-18).

In the opener, Megan Good tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out 14 batters in the process. In addition, she did not issue a walk. Junior outfielder Jessica Rutherford broke up the no-hit bid with a one-out double in the top of the seventh inning.

Good was just as lethal at the plate, drilling a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to put the Dukes up 3-0. James Madison tacked on three more runs during the next inning, with the big blow coming on a two-run homer by Madyson Moran.

Good improved to a perfect 15-0 with the win and recorded her 10th shutout of the season. The loss was tagged to Rozlyn Price, whose record dropped to 2-4.

Again Maryland, the Bearcats were down 2-0 but tied the game on a two-run homer by junior third baseman Kate Richard in the top of the fourth inning. It was her team-best third home run of the year.

Binghamton was down 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning but took advantage of three Maryland errors to score a pair of runs. Richard scored the tying run on a fielder's choice and senior outfielder Bridget Hunt scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error.

After tying the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, Maryland got the walk off win one inning later. Juli Strange led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single, reached second base on a wild pitch and scored on a base hit by Anna Kufta.

Madison Martin raised her record to 3-5 with the complete-game victory. Senior pitcher Shelby Donhauser was tagged with the loss and is now 0-2.

Binghamton wraps up play at the Maryland Tournament on Sunday with an 11 a.m. game against Buffalo and a 1:30 rematch against the Terps.
