Baseball sweeps DH over No. 19 Virginia Tech

Bearcats post pair of 11-inning wins, 9-8 and 6-5, run win streak to six games

BLACKSBURG, Va. - After more than seven hours of baseball, Binghamton baseball (6-3) notched two riveting extra-inning victories over 19th-ranked Virginia Tech (8-4), winning 9-8 and 6-5 both in 11 innings at English Field at Union Park. The wins gave BU three straight over the ACC member Hokies and ran the team's win streak to six games.

Facing one of the most potent offenses in the nation, Binghamton amassed 32 hits in the pair of games. Counting Friday's 12-5 win, BU is batting .351 in the series and its bullpen has a 1.65 ERA against a Hokies' lineup that ranks among the NCAA top-10 in eight offensive categories, including first in home runs and second in slugging.

In the opener, junior shortstop Paul Rufo went 4-for-5 with five RBI and sophomore third baseman Justin Yurchak hit an RBI double in the 11th inning to lift BU to a 9-8 win.

The Bearcats outhit the Hokies 18-15 and scored the final three runs of the game after trailing 8-6 in the sixth.

In the 11th, junior center fielder CJ Krowiak led off by reaching on an infield error. Two batters later, Yurchak sent a 1-2 pitch down the left field line to plate Krowiak with the winning run. Yurchak went 3-for-6.

Junior reliever Dylan Stock (W, 1-0) pitched three scoreless innings of two-hit ball and sophomore Cal Lawrence worked a clean 11th to record his first collegiate save. Stock struck out three and worked out of runners-on jams in the ninth and 10th frames. Lawrence stranded the tying run on second with a groundout to end the game.

Down 8-6, the Bearcats answered with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game. In the sixth, Rufo hit a two-out RBI single and in the seventh, junior designated hitter Pat Britt lofted a sacrifice fly to bring in the tying run. From there, BU pitchers closed the door on the No. 2 slugging team in the nation, tossing six straight scoreless frames. Freshman Jake Miller went 1.2 innings and struck out a pair before giving way to Stock.

Krowiak went 4-for-6 with an RBI and four runs scored and Britt and senior outfielders Eddie Posavec and Darian Herncane had two hits apiece.

In Game 2, BU snapped a 5-5 tie with an unearned run in the 11th inning and then senior Nicholas Liegi (W, 1-0) completed his two-inning scoreless stint by working around a leadoff walk to close the door in the bottom of the 11th.

Senior second baseman Henry Pellicciotti hit a one-out single and moved to second on a Herncane walk and a Krowiak grounder. Rufo hit a grounder to short that was misplayed, allowing Pellicciotti to score the winning run.

The Bearcats had trailed 5-3 in the eighth inning before tying it on a two-run single from senior first baseman Brendan Skidmore. With one out, Krowiak, Rufo and Yurchak all singled to load the bases and Skidmore followed with his big hit through the right side.

Skidmore and Herncane had two RBI apiece and Pellicciotti, Agresti and Yurchak had two hits apiece. For Yurchak, who entered the weekend third in the nation in hitting (.654), it was his ninth straight game with two or more hits to start his Binghamton career.

After sophomore starter Nick Gallagher went 6.0 innings and allowed two earned runs with five strikeouts, junior Jake Erhard entered and gave up only three hits and no earned runs in his three innings of work. Erhard struck out three before giving way to Liegi. Binghamton's three pitchers held Virginia Tech to 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position.

The teams finish their four-game set with a noon game on Sunday. Junior lefty Nick Wegmann gets the start for the Bearcats.
