BLACKSBURG, Va. - Junior
Nick Wegmann (W, 2-1) pitched 7.0 innings of 1-run ball and freshman
Ben Anderson put down the final six batters to give Binghamton baseball (7-3) a 2-1 win over No. 19 Virginia Tech (8-5) and an unprecedented four-game sweep of the Hokies. The victory also ran BU's win streak to seven games.
"I'm so proud of the way our guys competed all weekend," 25th-year head coach
Tim Sinicki said. "Four wins against a talented, well-coached team out of the ACC is something I really hope we can build off as we prepare for the upcoming America East season."
Pitching to his younger brother, freshman catcher
TJ Wegmann, in BU's first-ever sibling battery mates,
Nick Wegmann struck out five, walked just one and scattered six hits before yielding to Anderson, who retired all six batters he faced to notch his first collegiate save.
The Bearcats got all the scoring they needed in the third inning. Senior left fielder
Darian Herncane led off with a single. Junior center fielder
CJ Krowiak hit a bouncer to third and the Virginia Tech infielder throw wide to second, putting runners on first and third. Junior shortstop
Paul Rufo then plated Herncane with an RBI single to right field. Sophomore third baseman
Justin Yurchak then grounded into a double play, scoring Krowiak with the second run.
The Hokies got one run back in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of two singles and a groundout. But two defensive plays kept the score at 2-1. In the fifth inning, Wegmann gave up a two-out single but
TJ Wegmann threw him out attempting to steal, ending the threat. After Wegmann pitched a 1-2-3 sixth, the Hokies built another threat in the seventh. With two outs, Va. Tech hit a double and single in succession. But the single went to left field and Herncane threw out the runner at home to end the inning and preserve BU's 2-1 lead.Â
Anderson induced four fly ball outs, a line-out and an infield grounder to make quick work of a Hokies team that entered the weekend ranked No. 1 in the nation in home runs and No. 2 in slugging.
Rufo went 2-for-4 with an RBI and junior second baseman
Luke Tevlin was 2-for-3.
Binghamton next plays a four-game set at Delaware beginning on Friday. The Bearcats will face Wagner at the neutral site to begin the four-game weekend.
