Softball Loses Twice at Southern Utah Tournament

Bearcats fall 7-2 to Utah, 8-6 to Utah State

ST. GEORGE, Utah. – Binghamton dropped a pair of games in the second day of the Southern Utah/Red Desert Tournament. The Bearcats (2-8) lost 7-2 to Utah (13-3) in the opener and 8-6 to Utah State (11-3) in the second game.

Despite the setback, senior outfielder Bridget Hunt turned in an impressive afternoon at the plate. She went 5-for-7 (.714), scored twice and drove in four runs. Junior outfielder Jessica Rutherford was 2-for-6 and also scored a pair of runs.

Hunt drove in all four of her runs in the game against Utah State. She belted a two-run triple in the bottom of the third inning and scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly, giving the Bearcats a 3-2 lead. Two innings later, Hunt ripped a two-run double and scored two batters later on another sacrifice fly, padding the lead to 6-3.

Utah State, however, plated five runs during the two innings that followed to come back for the victory.

Kellie White improved to 5-1 with the victory while freshman pitcher Rayn Gibson fell to 1-3 with the loss.

In opener against Utah, the Bearcats were down 3-0 but rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Junior second baseman Stephanie Bielec single home one of the runs during that frame while Rutherford scored the other run on a fielding error.

Over the next four innings, however, the Utes scored four more runs to blow the game open.

Hailey Hilbern raised her record to 2-0 while freshman pitcher Rozlyn Price was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 1-3.
