Men’s Lacrosse Falls to UMBC 7-6

Bearcats win streak halts at eight games

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Binghamton men's lacrosse team (9-2, 3-1 AE) fell to America East foe UMBC (5-6, 3-1 AE), 7-6, Saturday evening at UMBC Stadium. Joe Licata led the Bearcats with three goals and one assist, and Tanner Cosens posted eight saves.

The loss halts the Bearcats win streak at eight games, the longest streak in Binghamton lacrosse history.

"I give credit to UMBC," stated first-year Head Coach Kevin McKeown. "They had a great game plan and executed it well. Hopefully on a quick turnaround we can learn from today and get ready for Albany on Wednesday."

The Retrievers took a quick lead in the first period, but the Bearcats quickly answered with four straight goals. Licata scored twice for Binghamton, while Tom Moore and Thomas McAndrew each added one goal in the first to give the Bearcats a 4-1 advantage.

Moore scored again in the second period, but UMBC was able to rally back  leaving the score 5-3 at the half.

In the third period, the Retrievers were able to hold the Bearcats scoreless and tie the game 5-5 after 45 minutes of play.

Licata scored his third goal, and the Bearcats lone goal in the second half to kick off the fourth period, giving the Bearcats an early 6-5 lead. UMBC answered with two straight to tie the game and later take a 7-6 lead.

UMBC won the following draw, but Cosens intercepted a Retrievers pass with two minutes remaining, setting up the Bearcats to tie the game. Stephen Petrelli fired a hard shot with 63 seconds left, but UMBC's keeper made an impressive save and maintained possession of the ball. The Retrievers were then able to successfully clear the ball and hold on to the lead as time ran out.

UMBC owned the shot advantage (32-19) and freshman Zach Barrett caused four turnovers and picked up four ground balls for the Bearcats.

Binghamton will host Albany on Wednesday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex at 7 p.m.
