Softball Gains Split Against UMass Lowell

Bearcats lose 7-6 in nine-inning opener, bounce back for 4-2 nightcap victory

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior outfielder Jessica Rutherford homered twice and freshman pitcher Rayn Gibson got a complete-game win, leading Binghamton (13-18, 5-1 AE) to a split against UMass Lowell (14-17, 6-3 AE) in an America East doubleheader on Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The River Hawks captured the opener 7-6 in nine innings but the Bearcats bounced back for a 4-2 win in the finale.

Rutherford, who is now batting a team-best .396 for the season, finished the day 3-for-8 (.375) with a team-high three RBI. Junior outfielder Carrie Maniccia went 2-for-3 (.333) with a home run. Also homering for the Bearcats were junior third baseman Kate Richard and senior shortstop Crysti Eichner.

Gibson, meanwhile, scattered two runs on eight hits and struck out six batters in the nightcap. Her record is now 6-4 for the season.

In the opener, however, it was Emily O'Brien who was the star of the game. She went 3-for-5 with three RBI, including the go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth inning, putting the River Hawks up 7-6. Binghamton left the bases loaded when the game ended.

The Bearcats were down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning but junior second baseman Stephanie Bielec tied the game on a RBI double. Binghamton was then down 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning but Richard led off the frame with a home run. Three batters later, senior outfielder Bridget Hunt tied the game when she scored on a fielder's choice.

Kaysee Talic pitched all nine innings for UMass Lowell, improving her record to 5-8. Senior pitcher Shelby Donhauser took the loss, dropping her record to 2-3.

Bielec and senior designated player Gabby Bracchi each went 2-for-4 in the opener.

The nine-inning game represents the Bearcats' longest contest of the season.

The Bearcats were down 1-0 in the second game but Eichner deadlocked the score on a leadoff home run in the bottom of the third inning. One inning later, Rutherford put the Bearcats up 2-1 with a one-out homer.

O'Brien tied the game at 2-2 when she hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning but the Bearcats answered right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the same inning. Maniccia led off with her first home run of the season and Rutherford padded the lead with a RBI single.

Gibson, meanwhile, got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth inning and retired three of the final four batters of the game.

Taking the loss in the second game was Lauren Ramirez, whose record is now 4-8.

The final game of the series between Binghamton and UMass Lowell has been moved up to 10 a.m. on Sunday.
