VESTAL, N.Y. - Freshman second baseman
Justin Drpich drove in three runs to key an 11-run outburst and give Binghamton baseball (12-6, 3-2 America East) an 11-2 win over UMBC (9-13, 3-3 AE) and a split of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The visitors won the opener 12-3.Â
After being roughed up in Game 1, BU bounced back to win the series with an equally-lopsided victory in Game 2. The Bearcats trailed 2-0 before scoring seven runs (on seven hits) in the fourth inning to take command. Binghamton then added a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth of the seven-inning game.
Junior starter
Jacob Wloczewski went 6.0 innings and after giving up two runs in the first, shut down the Retrievers over the next five. Junior
Dylan Stock pitched a scoreless seventh. Â
Drpich, who went a combined 5-for-8 with four RBI on the day, hit an RBI double in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4. Junior center fielder
CJ Krowiak followed with a two-run double to give BU the lead for good.
Senior first baseman
Brendan Skidmore went 2-for-3 with two RBI and senior left fielder
Darian Herncane added two RBI.Â
In Game 1, UMBC snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth inning and the Retrievers added four more in the sixth and three in the eighth. Binghamton pitchers surrendered 19 hits. Drpich went 3-for-4 with an RBBII and Krowiak added two hits and an RBI in the loss.
Binghamton begins a busy five-game week (all on road) with a non-conference tilt at Big Ten member Penn State Monday night. Â
