Women's soccer wins opener 2-1

Saager tallies two assists, Reilly nets game-winner in 61st minute to beat St. Bonaventure

VESTAL, N.Y. - Redshirt junior forward Kayla Saager assisted on two goals and Binghamton women's soccer (1-0) rallied past visiting St. Bonaventure (0-1) 2-1 in the season opener for both teams Friday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

After allowing a Bona goal less than two minutes into the contest, BU steadied itself and outshot its visitors 25-7, including 16-3 in the first half.

Sophomore forward Ryan Reilly netted the game-winner in the 61st minute. Saager took a feed from sophomore midfielder Carly Barnett down the left side and sent a crisp ball to the doorstep, where Reilly tapped it in for her first collegiate goal.

After giving up a breakaway goal just 1:33 into the game, Binghamton evened it in the 29th minute. Saager was fouled 28 yards out on the right side. With Bona slow to set up a wall, Saager alertly ripped a shot on goal that Bona keeper Lauren Malcolm blocked. But the rebound spilled out to freshman forward Essie Bonney, who blasted a shot to the upper netting from close range for her first collegiate tally.

Senior keeper Katie Hatziyianis was called on to make just three saves.

"We've had a good preseason and worked on our style of play and attack and tonight was time to put it all together," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We went down a goal really early and that's not how we want to start a game. But we had to respond and you saw the character and resolve of this team. We're happy with the win and where we are in the process right now."

The Bearcats stay at home and host Manhattan at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
