VESTAL, N.Y. - Redshirt junior forward
Kayla Saager tallied a goal and an assist and sophomore back
Sam O'Malley scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute to lift Binghamton women's soccer (2-0) to a 2-1 win over visiting Manhattan (1-1) Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Two days after opening the season with a 2-1 home win, BU repeated its result, thanks to Saager and O'Malley, who traded assists on each other's goals.Â
In the 33rd minute, Saager took a feed down the right side and despite a sharp angle near the endline, struck a laser that soared over the Jaspers' keeper and into the far corner.Â
Holding a 1-0 lead at intermission, BU surrendered a Manhattan equalizer just 41 seconds into the second half.
But the Saager-O'Malley combination struck nine minutes later. Saager fed O'Malley down the right side and her well-struck ball carried into the far corner.
The teams were even at 9-9 shots.Â
Senior keeper
Katie Hatziyianis made four saves. Â
"We were able to execute our game plan for the most part," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "It's huge to get the two wins this weekend. We're a young team and are still learning about each other. But we have a competitive mindset and we get after every opponent. We expect to get a 'W' every game and our 2-0 start is deserved. Our focus will be to keep it going as we move forward."
The Bearcats next travel to Cleveland to face Cleveland State Friday afternoon.
