Women's soccer draws at Bryant 0-0

Bearcats (5-1-3) notch third shutout in last four games, remain unbeaten on road

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Visiting Binghamton women's soccer (5-1-3) kept its road unbeaten streak intact with a 0-0 double overtime draw at Bryant (4-1-2) Friday afternoon at Bulldog Soccer Stadium. The Bearcats are 3-0-2 on the road this fall.

The teams played 110 minutes of evenly-matched, hard-nosed soccer with neither team creating an abundance of scoring opportunities. It was Binghamton's fourth overtime game in its last six outings.

"That was a gritty game today and I'm proud of how our group dealt with the match," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "Bryant was organized and tough plus difficult to break down. The quality of our possession in the first half let us down but then we matched their intensity and spirit after halftime. A game like this will prepare us for top level America East road matches coming soon."

Bryant held a 13-12 final shots count.

The Bearcats' best chances came on a handful of set pieces, the most dangerous of which was an early first-half direct kick from 20 yards out that redshirt junior forward Kayla Saager blasted into the Bulldogs' wall. With the shutout, Saager had her string of eight games with at least one point snapped.

Binghamton thought it had the difference maker in the final minute of the second overtime when a Bryant defender headed a clear and it bounced and hit the hand of her teammate in the box. But the PK whistle wasn't blown and BU was kept off the board for the first time in nine games this fall.

Anchored by senior keeper Katie Hatziyianis, freshman center back Erin Theiller and sophomore starting backs Sam O'Malley, Barbara Badeer and Lauren Spinnato, Binghamton recorded its third shutout in the last four games. Hatziyianis made four saves and came out to pick off several other dangerous balls in the box. In the final minute of the first overtime, she backpedaled and tipped a dangerous ball over the crossbar.

"We had terrific performances from Erin, Dora (Hayes), Lauren and Katie to get a shutout against a quality opponent," Bhattacharjee said.

Bryant was coming off back-to-back wins over fellow America East schools Stony Brook and Maine and also had a scoreless draw with UMass Lowell.

The Bearcats next play at LIU at 1 p.m. Sunday.
