Women's soccer defeats LIU 3-0

BU pumps in three second-half goals, finishes non-conference slate with 6-1-3 record

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer (6-1-3) scored three second-half goals, including two within a four-minute span, and the Bearcats blanked host LIU (2-6-1) 3-0 Sunday afternoon at LIU Field. With the win, BU remained unbeaten on the road this fall (4-0-2) and matched the win total (6) for all of last season.

"It was a very solid performance today," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "I was pleased to see a lot of good individual performances from different players. It took a while to wear things down but eventually it happened and it was nice to get three different goal scorers along with the shutout. This gives us a strong springboard leading into America East play against a talented New Hampshire team."

After the teams played a scoreless first half, redshirt junior forward Kayla Saager put Binghamton on the board just 3:09 into the second half. Saager took a cross from sophomore forward Ryan Reilly and converted to the near post for her conference-best seventh goal of the season.

Then with BU still clinging to a 1-0 lead, the Bearcats scored twice in a 3:28 span late in the game for the final cushion. Junior midfielder Patty Loonie made it 2-0 when she finished off a feed from sophomore linemate Abby Wick in the 77th minute for her first of the season. Then freshman forward Essie Bonney notched her third collegiate goal less than four minutes later to close out the scoring.

Senior keeper Katie Hatziyianis made four saves to earn her third consecutive shutout.

The Bearcats held a commanding 20-7 shots advantage.

With the win, BU stretched its unbeaten streak to five. The Bearcats have a week to prepare for their America East opener at New Hampshire on Sunday.
