POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Binghamton volleyball team (2-4) topped No. 41 Cleveland State 3-2 on Saturday to close out the volley in the valley tournament hosted by Marist.The
Bearcats defeated Cleveland State in five sets 16-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-25 and 15-12.
The Vikings took the first match after getting out to a 10-7 lead midway through the set. Cleveland State was able to maintain the lead and eventually top the Bearcats 25-16.
In the second set, the teams went point for point until Cleveland State got out to a 21-18 lead, but Binghamton did not back down. The Bearcats battled back and scored the final three points of the set on kills from Lexi LaGoy and Erin Shultz and were able to take the game 25-23.The Bearcats got out to an early lead in the third set on a Vikings attacking error and kills from Kristella Morina, Gaby Alicea and Elis Gadelha and continued to extend their lead to take the set 25-18.
Cleveland State won the fourth game 25-15 to tie the match 2-2 and send it into a fifth set.
In the fifth, Gaby Alicea served four straight points to give the Bearcats a 14-12 lead and then Shutlz produced a match winning kill to give Binghamton the match.
Alicea again led the Bearcats with 16.5 points on 16 kills. Shultz produced 13 kills and Morina added 11. Sarah Ngo assisted on 40 points with 13 digs while Samantha Gioiosa added 24.
Kristella Morina and Erin Shultz were named to the Volley in the Valley All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the tournament.
Binghamton is back in action next weekend at Cornell for the Cornell Invite.
