Men's basketball loses to Vermont 68-54

T. Stewart with 12 points, Rodriguez, Show, Muhammad with 9 apiece; Game draws 4,445 fans

VESTAL, N.Y. - Undefeated Vermont (18-5, 8-0 America East) stretched the longest conference win streak in the nation (29) with a 68-54 road win over Binghamton men's basketball (10-14, 1-8 AE) Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.

The Catamounts put four players in double figures and moved away from the Bearcats in the second half. A 3-pointer from senior Willie Rodriguez brought BU to within three, 36-33, 4:48 into the second half. But Vermont countered with a 3 to start an 18-7 run that resulted in a 54-40 cushion with 9:49 left. Binghamton drew no closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Redshirt freshman wing Tyler Stewart led the Bearcats with 12 points, with eight coming in the first half. Rodriguez, junior guard J.C. Show and sophomore guard Fard Muhammad each wound up with nine points.

Vermont used a 12-4 half-ending run to stake a 32-23 lead at intermission. The Bearcats committed 12 of their 14 turnovers in the first frame and the change of possession resulted in 13 more visitor shots in the first half.

In the second, BU tightened up its handle but surrendered 12 offensive rebounds to the Catamounts, who wound up taking 17 more shots for the game.

The game drew a season-high 4,445 fans. It also marked the 14th anniversary of the inaugural game at the Events Center (Jan. 31, 2004), when BU defeated Hartford 75-68.

The Bearcats next make the long trek to Bangor, Maine for a Saturday afternoon matchup with the Black Bears.
