VESTAL, N.Y. – Bernie Wright and Michael Pavick each netted a goal, leading visiting Bucknell (6-4-3) to a 2-1 win over Binghamton (3-9-2) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Tuesday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The match marked the Bearcats' final non-conference contest of the year.
Wright's goal in the 31st minute occurred when he broke into the box and scored from close range. Daniel Hallowell was credited with the assist.
Pavick, meanwhile, headed in a corner kick by Cody Wax in the 53rd minute, padding the lead to 2-0.
For both Wright and Pavick, it marked their second goals of the season.
Binghamton's first chance to get on the scoreboard came in the 75th minute, when sophomore midfielder
Noah Luescher was fouled inside the box. The ensuring penalty kick by senior forward
Nikos Psarras, however, was saved by Bison goalkeeper Emmett Witmer.
In the 86th minute, senior midfielder
Connor McKnight broke the shutout as he scored on a blast from the top of the box. It was his third goal of the season and was assisted by Psarras.
Witmer came up with six saves, including a pair from close range in the run of play, to preserve the win.
"This is a disappointing loss," head coach
Paul Marco said. "Defensively, we didn't do a good enough job on the two goals Bucknell scored. Give Bucknell credit. They are a very good and well-organized team. Still, we were unable to take advantage of our scoring chances in the box."
Bucknell held an 11-10 shot advantage. Shots on goal were even at 7-7.
Binghamton resumes conference play on Saturday with a 7 p.m. game at UMBC. The Bearcats are currently in a five-way tie for second place with a 2-2-0 record in America East play.
NOTES: McKnight is now tied for the team lead in goals with Luescher and junior forward
Haris Brkovic. He is also second in on the team with eight total points … the penalty kick attempt by Psarras was the Bearcats first of the season.
