VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting UMBCÂ (6-15, 2-5 America East) had four players with double-digit kills and rallied past Binghamton volleyball (4-16, 2-5 AE) 3-1 Friday night at West Gym. The Retrievers dropped the opening set 25-22 before storming back to win the final three sets, 25-18, 25-13, 25-20. The teams split the season series after BU won the first encounter in Baltimore one month ago.
"It's disappointing ... they just outplayed us tonight," head coach
Glenn Kiriyama said. "We didn't execute very well. Our passing wasn't great and that really hurt our offense. I felt like we couldn't get anything going throughout the whole match. It's unfortunate but that's the way it goes sometimes."Â Â
Senior hitter
Gaby Alicea led the Bearcats with 13 kills and 17 digs. She added a pair of aces and blocks. Freshman setter
Kiara Adams collected 30 assists and 11 digs.
The Bearcats struggled to a .126 attack percentage that was weighted down by the middle two sets.Â
In the opening set, Alicea and junior
Victoria Keghlian had four kills apiece and BU broke away from a 20-20 tie to take the early lead. Keghlian gave BU a 21-20 lead with a kill, senior
Erin Shultz and freshman
Tyra Wilson then combined for a block and Alicea followed with a service ace to stretch BU's lead to 23-20. After UMBC got one back, Wilson put down a kill in the middle and then after another Retriever point, the Bearcats got the win on a UMBC service error.Â
The second set was even at 14-14 before UMBCÂ tallied 11 of the remaining 15 points to even the match.Â
In the third, BU trailed 11-7 but managed just four kills the rest of the way and UMBC pulled away for a comfortable 25-13 win.Â
The Bearcats hit .211 in the fourth set but UMBC countered with a .343 mark and broke away from a 15-15 deadlock.Â
Binghamton is off for eight days before hosting second-place Albany next Sunday at 5 p.m. at West Gym.Â
