Men’s Soccer Loses 1-0 to Vermont on Senior Night

Bearcats honor 11 graduating players before the match, still alive for playoff spot

VESTAL, N.Y. –  Jon Arnar Barddal scored in the fourth minute, leading Vermont (11-6-0, 4-2-0 AE) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (3-11-2, 2-4-0 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats are now tied with Albany for the sixth and final playoff spot in the upcoming conference tournament and will travel to meet the Great Danes on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

With just 3:05 gone in the match, the Catamounts were awarded a penalty kick. The attempt was saved by redshirt junior goalkeeper Chris Shutler but the rebound came back into play. Barddal eventually scored, with the assist going to Geo Alves.

Binghamton created several scoring chances, especially in the second half. The best attempt was a close-range shot by senior forward Nikos Psarras that was saved by Clay Thomas in the 80th minute.

"We just ran out of time tonight," head coach Paul Marco said. "We played well enough to win and had several scoring chances. Still, I am very disappointed with the way we conceded the goal. Chris made a great save but we didn't do a good job at all of clearing the ball afterwards."
Vermont held a 12-10 lead in the final shot count. Shots on goal were even at 4-4.

Before the match, the Bearcats honored their 11 graduating players during the program's annual Senior Day Ceremony. The players who took part in the event included Kevin Flesch, Florian Orth, Adam Blackwell, Psarras, Chris Nkoghe, Connor McKnight, Shutler, Stephen McKenna, Miles Burbank, Harrison Weilbacher and Gerardo Amigon. It represents the largest class ever to take part in the Senior Day ceremony during the program's 17-year NCAA Division I era.

NOTE: The America East has yet to release its tie-breaking criteria in the event that Binghamton and Albany play to a draw on Wednesday night. The winner of the match would clinch a spot in the America East Tournament while the loser would conclude their season.
