VESTAL, N.Y. – Martieon Watson scored the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute, leading Stony Brook (6-3-2, 3-0-0 AE) to a 2-1 win over Binghamton (3-7-2, 2-1-0 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The match, which was played before 1,343 fans on Homecoming Weekend, determined sole possession of first place in the conference.
Watson, who finished with a goal and an assist, headed in a free kick by Serge Gamwanya. It was his second goal of the season.
Watson also played a part in the Seawolves' first goal, which broke a scoreless tie in the 53rd minute. Trausti Birgisson headed in a cross, with both Watson and Mark Irvine being credited with the assists.
Binghamton fought back and tied up the match in the 73rd minute. Sophomore midfielder
Noah Luescher fired a shot from the top of the box into the lower-right corner of the net. It was his third goal of the season and was assisted by sophomore back
Chris Stamper.
Luescher now has three goals in his last four matches. He is tied for the team lead in goals and is first in both assists (four) and total points (10).
The Bearcats were not able to record a shot on goal following Watson's score.
"I thought we battled quite well in both halves," head coach
Paul Marco said. "It was a tight game but give Stony Brook credit. They played great tonight. We fought back to tie the game but it was really disappointing to give up a goal on a set piece that late in the game."
Stony Brook had an 8-5 advantage in shots and 5-2 in shots on goal.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper
Chris Shutler had a pair of saves, including one from close range in the 71st minute.
Binghamton heads to UMass Lowell next Saturday for a 4 p.m. game.
