HAMILTON, N.Y. - Host Colgate used an 18-7 run to take control midway through the second half and the Raiders (4-1) made four free throws in the final 52 seconds to hold off Binghamton men's basketball (1-4) 76-68 Monday night from Cotterell Court.
Freshman guard
Sam Sessoms led all scorers with 19 points and senior forward
Chancellor Barnard registered his first double-double as a Bearcat with 11 points and 11 rebounds. But the Bearcats struggled beyond the arc (7-for-26) and Colgate shot 50 percent in the second half to turn a see-saw game in its favor.
"We played a good team in their building ... a team picked high in their conference ... and we didn't quite play good enough to win," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "We did some good things and worked our butts off. I like the way we took care of the basketball and hit the glass but we didn't shoot the '3' like we needed to."
The game featured five ties and 10 lead changes.
Binghamton led 35-34 before the Raiders went on their big run that resulted in a 52-42 cushion with 10:55 left. The Bearcats cut their deficit to five when senior forward
Caleb Stewart converted a layup and ensuing free throw with 8:02 left, making it 56-51. But Colgate hit a three on its next possession and BU could only trade baskets for much of the rest of the way.
Stewart wound up with 12 points and six boards and junior guard
Richard Caldwell, Jr. gave BU its fourth player in double figures with 10 points.
The Bearcats are off for the Thanksgiving break before welcoming Sacred Heart to the Events Center on Saturday afternoon.
