Women’s Basketball Loses 65-55 to Lehigh

Carmody pours in career-high 27 points

VESTAL, N.Y. – Visiting Lehigh (4-1) drained nine three-point field goals, sparking its 65-55 win over Binghamton (3-3) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Wednesday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The contest marked the second of a season-high four-game home stand for the Bearcats.

The loss overshadowed a career-high 27-point performance by senior forward Rebecca Carmody. She went 9-of-15 from the floor, 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point arc and went 7-of-10 from the free throw line. Carmody also finished with a game-high seven rebounds.

At the other end of the floor, however, the Mountain Hawks shot 9-of-20 (45 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. In the second half alone, they were 5-of-8 (.625).

"Tonight was a tough one," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "Lehigh is a good team and they came in here on the road hungry for a win on the road. Rebecca was great for us but we got into foul trouble and didn't have other people step up for us."

The Bearcats were down by as much as 29-20 early in the third period but came roaring back to tie the score at 35-35 on a layup by sophomore forward Kaylee Wasco with 1:55 left to go. The Mountain Hawks, however, struck by on the next possession as Megan Walker drained a three-point field goal. From there, Lehigh held on to a 45-42 lead at the end of the period.

Binghamton was able to pull within 50-49 with 5:21 left in regulation on a pair of free throws by Carmody. Once again, however, Lehigh responded with a three-point field goal, this time by Camryn Benz, padding its lead to 53-49. On the following Mountain Hawk possession, it was Mary Clougherty's turn to drain a three pointer, upping the lead to 56-49.

Carmody's final points came on a layup with 45 seconds left to go, trimming the deficit to 60-55. Lehigh then iced the game with five free throws down the stretch.

Walker led Lehigh with 13 points. Hannah Hedstrom added 12 points while Benz finished with 11 points.

Binghamton hosts Army on Sunday at 2 p.m.
