VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior
Rebecca Carmody scored a game-high 16 points, leading Binghamton (1-0) to a 69-62 win over Charleston (0-0) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The victory marked the debut of
Bethann Shapiro Ord as the Bearcats' new head coach.
Carmody, who also had five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals, was one of two Binghamton players to reach double figures in scoring. Sophomore forward
Olivia Ramil, playing in her first game since transferring from Georgetown two summers ago, finished with 10 points.
Junior guard
Carly Boland had a solid overall game, finishing with nine points, six rebounds, five assists, four blocks and two steals. The four blocks tied her career high, which she set against UMass Lowell on Feb. 4, 2017.
Shapiro Ord, meanwhile, arrived at Binghamton following a seven-year stint as the head coach at Weber State. The game against Charleston had added significance because its first-year coach is Becky Burke, who played at Louisville from 2009-12, when Shapiro Ord was member of the Cardinals' staff.
"The team that we played tonight is going to be very good under Coach Burke," Shapiro Ord said. "They did a terrific job. But I am really proud of our girls. They got over the hump and got this first win."
Played out of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) on the Division III level, Charleston showed early that it was able to compete with the Bearcats. The Golden Eagles went on a 10-2 run in a span of 2:21 to go up 11-9 with 4:43 left in the first period.
The Bearcats regrouped and built a 22-16 left over the ensuing three minutes. Carmody and Ramil each netted four points during that stretch.
Binghamton appeared ready to pull away in the second quarter, as it led 29-21 with 8:18 left to go. Charleston, however, refuses to go quietly, trimming the deficit to 31-30 with 5:49 remaining. Brooklyn Panelli had seven points during that span.
In the third quarter, the Bearcats took 50-41 lead with 3:20 left to go as Carmody converted a three-point play. Once again, however, Charleston hung tough and got to within 55-52 with 8:18 left in regulation.
With the Bearcats up 63-59 with 1:48 remaining, Boland's three-point play gave them the breathing room they'd need down the stretch.
Junior guard
Kai Moon finished with nine points while junior forward
Karlee Krchnavi tied a career high with 10 rebounds. It marked the third time in her career that Krchnavi has reached double figures in rebounding.
Sophomore forward
Kaylee Wasco, meanwhile, chipped in a career high eight points.
Anna Hayton led Charleston with 15 points. Raziyah Farrington added 14 points while Pannell finished with 10 points.
Charleston stayed in the game by going 7-for-19 from three-point range. In the paint, however, Binghamton held a commanding 46-28 advantage.
Binghamton stays home to face Cornell on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
NOTES: Shapiro Ord is the first Binghamton head coach to win their debut since Laurie Kelly on Nov. 14, 1998. Known then as the Colonials, the squad defeated Cheyney (Pa.) 80-48 … because Charleston is not a Division I program, their win-loss record is not affected by the outcome of the game.
