VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior guard
Kai Moon went a perfect 15-for-15 from the free throw line and finished with a game-high 22 points, powering Binghamton (2-0) to a 72-61 win over Cornell (0-1) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Friday evening at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. With the victory, the Bearcats are off to their first 2-0 start since the 2011-12 season.
Moon's performance from the free throw line marks just the fourth time in program history a Binghamton player has been perfect with at least 10 attempts. She was also efficient from the field, going 3-for-6 and draining her lone three-point field goal shot.
Senior forward
Rebecca Carmody finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and tied a career high with five steals. Off the bench, sophomore guard
Lizzy Spindler finished with 11 points, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and draining a trio of three pointers in the process.
"This was a great team effort," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "A lot of players stepped up tonight – not just with points but with energy and effort. Cornell came out strong tonight and they are going to be very good this year but our girls buckled down as the game went on tonight."
Binghamton sputtered offensively in the first period, trailing by 13-7 after 10 minutes of play. In the second period, however, they came storming back to score 28 points and take a 35-33 lead at the half. The key stretch was a 13-3 run by Binghamton in a span of 4:30 to go up 33-31 with 1:35 left before the break.
The lead swung back and forth in the first three minutes of the third period before the Bearcats scored eight straight points to go up 45-39 with 3:09 remaining. Moon and junior guard
Carly Boland went a combined 5-for-6 from the free throw line during that span.
Cornell got to within 45-43 on a layup by Laura Bagwell-Katalinich with 1:48 remaining in the third period. Carmody immediately answered with a three-point field goal and sophomore forward
Olivia Ramil converted a layup, giving Binghamton a 50-43 advantage heading into the final period.
In the fourth period, the lead remained in single digits until Spindler's three-point field gave the Bearcats a 62-49 cushion with 4:17 left to go.
Bagwell Katalinich and Halley Miklos each led Cornell with 14 points.
Junior guard
Karlee Krchnavi added eight points and a game-high two blocks while Boland finished with seven points, three rebounds, two assists a block and a pair of steals.
As a team, Binghamton went 23-for-26 from the free throw lines (.885) and 9-for-15 from three-point range (.600). That offset Cornell's 32-18 advantage in points in the paint.
The Bearcats also scored 20 of their points off of turnovers.
Binghamton travels to Lafayette for a 2 p.m. game on Sunday.
NOTES: Moon finished one points off her career high of 23 points, which she set against Bucknell on Nov. 29, 2017 … Shapiro Ord is the first Binghamton coach to start their career off 2-0 since Laurie Kelly during the 1998-99 campaign … Moon previously went 12-for-12 from the free throw line against Hartford on March 3, 2018 in the America East quarterfinals.
