VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Youngstown State (4-8) held Binghamton men's basketball (3-8) to 33 percent shooting and the Penguins defeated the Bearcats 58-48 Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.
In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, the Horizon League members built a nine-point halftime cushion and allowed BU no closer than nine points over the game's final 13+ minutes.
Senior forward
Caleb Stewart took advantage of a career-high 36 minutes and contributed team-highs of 15 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. He hit 5-of-9 shots (3-of-6 threes) to pace an offense that was held 23 points under its season scoring average.
"We just couldn't get it going today," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "Our guards had a hard time finding rhythm and even though we competed and played good defense, our offense didn't click."
The Bearcats made just seven shots in the first half (2-for-12 from 3-point range) and with the exception of Stewart and classmates
Chancellor Barnard (3-for-3 FG, 7 pts.) and
Timmy Rose (2-for-2 FG, 7 pts.), the team struggled on the offensive end throughout.Â
Freshman guard
Sam Sessoms added nine points - all in the second half. Sessoms just missed his 11th consecutive double-digit game to start his collegiate career. Â
Binghamton next heads to Notre Dame for a Tuesday night encounter with the ACC member Fighting Irish.Â
