Women’s Basketball Loses 62-57 to Rider

Spindler nets game-high 17 points, Boland and Carmody each score 13 points

VESTAL, N.Y. – Stella Johnson scored a game-high 21 points and recorded nine steals, leading Rider (4-5) to a 62-57 win over Binghamton (5-5) in an non-conference women' basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The game marked the Bearcats' final home contest of 2018.

Sophomore guard Lizzy Spindler scored a career-best 17 points, making five of her seven three-point field goals in the process. Senior guard Rebecca Carmody and junior guard Carly Boland each finished with 13 points.

The Bearcats, however, were undone by a season-high 28 turnovers. The Broncs capitalized on the miscues for 21 of their points. In addition, Rider held a commanding 18-1 advantage in steals.

"This was a tough loss," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We weren't able to take care of the basketball like we should have. But we didn't just lay down when we got behind. I am proud of how we didn't stop battling back at the end of the game."

Binghamton drained seven of their 10 three-point attempts in the first half and took a 36-27 lead at the break. Spindler hit back-to-back three pointers in the final 36 seconds of the second period.

In the third period, however, Rider outscored the Bearcats 21-11 to take a 48-47 lead. Lexi Posset, who finished with 19 points, hit the go-ahead three pointer from half court at the buzzer.

Binghamton continued to struggle in the fourth period, falling behind 53-47 with five minutes remaining. Spindler's three-point field goal with 29 seconds remaining in regulation closed the gap to 57-54 but the Broncs came right back on a layup by Johnson with 21 seconds left to go.

Sophomore forward Olivia Ramil ended up with five points, seven rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocks.

Binghamton travels to defending NCAA champion Notre Dame next Sunday for a 1 p.m. game.

NOTES: Boland has reached double figures in four straight games, averaging 11.8 points during that stretch ... Spindler, whose previous career high was 13 points against Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 30, has four games this season with 10 or more points ... Carmody continues to lead the Bearcats in scoring with 14.0 points per game.
