Women's Lacrosse edged by Niagara 8-7

Kennedy and Arthur score hat-tricks for the Bearcats

NIAGARA FALLS - The Binghamton women's lacrosse team fell 8-7 to the Niagara Purple Eagles Saturday afternoon at Niagara Field. The Bearcats were led on offense by seniors Bri Arthur and Jacqueline Kennedy, each scoring a hat trick on the day. On the defensive end, sophomore Alexa Franze picked up a team-high seven ground balls and recorded four caused turnovers. The duo of sophomore Taylor Passuello and senior Emma Jehle in the net recorded twelve saves in the game.

"Today was a matter of response and handling the controllables," head coach Stephanie Allen said. "We fell short in those areas. Niagara made very good adjustments in the second half and we did not play to our capability to counter that."

The Bearcats jumped to an early three goal lead in the first half, as Kennedy and Arthur, who produced back to back goals, found the back of the net. The two teams then traded goals, as Niagara got on the board before freshman Paige Volkmann scored her second goal of the season on a free position shot. Niagara scored again, cutting Binghamton's lead to two just nine minutes into the game. Kennedy scored the final BU goal of the half, capitalizing on a Niagara turnover to take a 5-3 lead into halftime.

In an action packed five minutes at the start of the second half, the Purple Eagles outscored the Bearcats 3-1, tying the score at sixes with 25 minutes still to play. Back to back goals by Niagara's Rachel MacCheyne, who scored a game-high four total on the day, pushed Niagara to an 8-6 lead. A valiant effort from Kennedy, scoring with five to go, brought the Bearcats within one. Coming down to the last possession, the Bearcats were unable to find the back of the net as time ran out, falling 8-7 to the Purple Eagles.

The Bearcats are back on the field Thursday, February 22 for an away game against Lafayette. The game is set for a 7 p.m. start time.
