BEAUMONT, Texas – The Binghamton softball team (0-2) opened its 2018 season with a pair of games at the Lamar Cardinal Classic on Friday. The Bearcats, however, were defeated 4-0 by Alabama A&M and 7-4 by the host Cardinals.
In the first game, Binghamton held Alabama A&M to just two hits but were undone by a pair of errors. The Bulldogs plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third innings and two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Offensively, the Bearcats left seven runners on base.
Against Lamar in the nightcap, Binghamton pounded out 11 hits but left 12 runners on base.
Down 7-2 in the top of the seventh inning, the Bearcats rallied for a pair of runs. Senior third baseman
Kate Richard tripled home the first run and scored one batter later on a single by freshman first baseman
Alex Guay. The Bearcats, however, left the bases loaded when the game ended.
Sophomore designated hitter
Kassidy Seary hit a team-best .500 for the day (2-for-4). Richard, freshman shortstop Mikayla Alvarez and senior outfielder
Jessica Rutherford all finished the day 3-for-7 (.429).
Binghamton faces Loyola-Chicago at 10:30 a.m. EST and Loyola at 3:30 p.m. EST on Saturday as play continues at the Lamar Cardinal Classic.
