LYNCHBURG, Va. - Liberty (6-1) hit two home runs in the first three innings and withstood a Binghamton rally in the ninth to edge the Bearcats (2-4) 3-2 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Liberty Baseball Field.Â
The teams combined for just seven hits in the rubber game of the weekend series.
The host Flames hit a solo home run in the second inning and added a two-run home run in the third inning to do its damage. After no-hitting Liberty over the game's final four innings, the Bearcats scored twice and had the tying run on base in the ninth inning before the rally was cut short.Â
Senior center fielder
CJ Krowiak led off with a home run over the left field wall - his second home run in as many games. With one out, senior shortstop
Paul Rufo walked and came around to score when a single from senior designated hitter
Jason Agresti was misplayed in the outfield. With Agresti on first representing the tying run, however, BU had back-to-back flyouts to end the game.
Senior lefty
Nick Wegmann (L, 1-1) went 4.0 innings and scattered three runs on four hits. He struck out four. Sophomore
Ben Anderson (2 IP) struck out four in his hitless stint. Seniors
Jake Erhard and
Joe Orlando each pitched a clean inning to close out the game.Â
The Bearcats had just six baserunners.
Sophomore catcher
TJ Wegmann went 1-for-3 with a double.  Â
Binghamton begins a three-game series at Richmond Friday afternoon.
