POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Binghamton men's lacrosse team (0-4) fell to Marist (1-4) Sunday afternoon, 8-7, at Tenney Stadium.
Stephen Petrelli posted his third straight hat trick, scoring three goals. Thomas McAndrew added two while Rob Martin made 10 saves in the net for Binghamton.
"Unfortunately we came up just a bit short against a good team in Marist," said head coach Kevin McKeown. " They were able to execute a few more plays then we were and that proved to be the difference. I am proud of the way we fought and showed some resiliency at the end of the game. We'll learn from the film as a group and get better with a full week of practice."
In the first period, Marist scored to take an early lead but Stephen Petrelli answered for the Bearcats netting two straight goals of his own. The Red Foxes tied the game at two to close the first period of play.
Sean Gilroy found the back of the net on a pass from Petrelli early in the second period to give Binghamton back the lead, but Marist was able to score quickly and tie the game again. The teams entered halftime knotted at three goals each.
The Red Foxes jumped out to an early 5-3 lead after netting two goals to start the second half. McAndrew answered for Binghamton scoring an unassisted goal at 6:02. Marist scored one more to take back a two goal lead. Jon Perotto scored his first goal of the season on a pass from Petrelli with nine seconds remaining to put the Bearcats back within one goal.
Marist added two early goals to increase their lead to 5-8 in the fourth, but Binghamton did not back down. Petrelli scored his third goal of the game on an assist from William Tallbott-Shere at 2:20 and McAndrew found the back of the net 15 seconds later to cut the Marist lead to 8-7. The Bearcats had an opportunity to tie the game as time ran out, but fell short.
Petrelli lead Binghamton with five points on three goals and two assists. McAndrew added two goals and Jackson Reiger posted two assists.
Binghamton is back in action next Saturday when they travel to Geneva to take on Hobart.
