STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (4-11, 1-2 America East) scored two runs in the 10th inning to finish off an 8-6 win over Stony Brook (9-8, 2-1 AE) in the suspended game from Saturday but then surrendered four late runs to lose the nightcap, 7-5 at Joe Nathan Field.Â
The Bearcats were four outs away from a sweep and series win in their conference opener but the Seawolves struck for four runs (three unearned) with two out in the eighth inning to turn the tables.Â
The day began with the completion of an extra-inning game that was halted due to darkness Saturday night, tied 6-6 after eight innings. After a scoreless ninth frame, BU struck for the two deciding runs in the top of the 10th inning and that was enough for junior lefty
Robert Brown (W, 1-0), who allowed just two hits in two scoreless innings of work. In the 10th, junior outfielder
Daniel Franchi led off with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman
Jake Evans. Sophomore catcher
TJ Wegmann followed with a double down the right field line. With runners on second and third, senior center fielder
CJ Krowiak gave BU a 7-6 lead with an RBI groundout. Junior right fielder
Anthony Meduri followed with a two-out RBI single to right center to give the Bearcats an insurance run.Â
In the bottom of the 10th, Stony Brook got a leadoff single but freshman first baseman
Shane Marshall started a 3-6-3 double play to erase the threat. After a two-out single, Brown induced a soft liner to second to end the game.Â
Meduri went 4-for-6 with three RBI and Wegmann went 3-for-4. Krowiak and senior designated hitter
Jason Agresti had two RBI apiece.Â
In the series finale, Binghamton led 5-3 after seven innings before Stony Brook rallied, thanks to a pair of hits, an infield error and then the big blow - a three-run home run. The Bearcats went down 1-2-3 in the ninth to end it.
Down 2-0 after the first frame, BU plated three runs in the second inning. Agresti led off with a single and sophomore third baseman
Justin Drpich drew a walk. After a fielder's choice and stolen base put runners on second and third with one out, Franchi delivered a two-run triple to right center on a 3-2 pitch, tying the score at 2-2. Evans followed with a squeeze bunt to score Franchi with the go-ahead run.Â
In the fifth, BU made it 4-2 when Krowiak plated another run with an RBI grounder. Stony Brook got the run back in the bottom of the inning and then BU put its fifth run on the boars in the seventh when Meduri's two-out RBI single scored Evans, who had reached on a hit-by-pitch.Â
The Seawolves outhit BU 10-6. Six different Bearcats had one hit apiece.
Binghamton next faces BIG EAST power St. John's in a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday in Queens.Â
NOTE
Junior outfielder
Anthony Meduri hit .438 with four doubles and six RBI in the three-game series. He leads the team with a .360 season average.
