Softball Gains Split in Opening Day at Citrus 2 Classic

Bearcats lose 2-1 to Troy but bounce back with 9-6 win over Delaware

ORLANDO, Fla. – Senior third baseman Kate Richard homered twice and drove in three runs as Binghamton (2-4) split a pair of games in its first day at the Citrus 2 Classic. The Bearcats lost the first game 2-1 against Troy (13-6) but rebounded to defeat Delaware (3-10) 9-6 in the finale.

Richard hit both of her home runs in the win over the Blue Hens, marking the third time in her career she has homered twice in a game. Sophomore designated player Kassidy Seary also drove in three runs against Delaware while freshman outfielder Lauren Martinez finished the day with two doubles, two RBI and scored twice.

Against Delaware, Richard opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. It was her first homer of the season.

Delaware came back to take a 3-2 lead through three innings but Martinez tied the game on a RBI double in the top of the fourth inning. Two batters later, freshman shortstop Makayla Alverez singled home the go-ahead run.

With the game tied at 4-4, Seary doubled in two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Two innings later, Richard led off the inning with a home run and both Seary and Martinez followed with RBI doubles.

Freshman pitcher Chelsea Howard raised her record to 2-0 with the victory while Sarah Piening dropped to 2-6 with the loss.

In the opening game against Troy, the Bearcats were held scoreless until sophomore catcher Sarah Herskowitz led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a home run. That trimmed the deficit to 2-1.

Binghamton left the tying run on second base when the game ended.

Clair Graves pitched the first five innings to improve her record to 4-4. Peyton Glover tossed a pair of scoreless innings to nail down her first save of the year. The loss was tagged to sophomore pitcher Rayn Gibson, who is now 0-2.

Alverez batted a team-best .429 over the two games (3-for-7) while Martinez and senior outfielder Jessica Rutherford both finished 2-for-6 (.333).

For the season, Rutherford continues to lead the Bearcats in batting (.400), followed by Alvarez (.368), Seary (.368) and Richard (.350).

Binghamton has an 11 a.m. exhibition game against the Czech National Team on Monday followed by a 1:30 game against Niagara as play continues at the Citrus 2 Classic.

NOTES: Richard now has 29 home runs for her career, which continues to rank fifth all time in program history. Her 117 RBI – including a team-best seven this season – also ranks fifth … Rutherford now has 180 hits for her career, vaulting her into a tie for third place all-time with Jessica Phillips (2010-13).
