Baseball drops pair at Marist, 2-1 and 6-2

Krowiak collects four hits; BU loses opener in extra innings, leaves 12 stranded in nightcap

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Host Marist broke ties late in each game and swept Binghamton baseball 2-1 (8 inn.) and 6-2 Wednesday afternoon at McCann Field. The Red Foxes (16-14) won the opener in extra innings and then maximized their five hits in the nightcap. The Bearcats (9-20-1) left 19 runners stranded in the 15 combined innings.

In Game 1, the teams were tied 1-1 after seven innings before Marist ended the game on a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth. A single, double and intentional walk loaded the bases with two outs before the deciding hit.

The Bearcats were limited to six hits - all singles - and left two runners stranded in the top of the eighth inning.

Binghamton struck first with a run in the opening frame. Senior center fielder CJ Krowiak (4-for-8 on day) hit a one-out single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on an RBI single to center by senior shortstop Paul Rufo. Marist tied it with a run in the bottom of the second before the teams played five straight scoreless innings.

Sophomore Ben Anderson was the most effective of four BU pitchers, tossing 2.0 hitless innings with three strikeouts. Krowiak went 2-for-4 to pace the offense.

In Game 2, Marist snapped a 2-2 tie with four runs in the fifth inning - on three walks, two errors and just one hit. The Bearcats outhit their hosts 8-5 but committed three errors and left 12 men on base.

After the Red Foxes scored twice in the first inning, BU countered with two in the top of the fourth. With one out, junior first baseman Matt Tsukroff singled and two hitters later, Krowiak reached on an infield error. Junior third baseman Greg Satriale followed with a two-run double to left, knotting the score at 2-2.

Tsukroff went 2-for-3 with a run, Krowiak went 2-for-4 with a run and Satriale collected his first two RBIs of the season.

Senior Jake Erhard tossed 2.0 hitless innings and freshman Josh Kopcza recorded two strikeouts in his clean 1.1 innings.

The Bearcats next welcome Albany to the Complex for a three-game America East weekend series, beginning with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday.
