VESTAL, N.Y. - Senior left-hander
Nick Wegmann fired a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and Binghamton baseball (10-21-1, 6-8 America East) gained a doubleheader split with Albany (16-16, 6-8 AE) with a 2-0 win Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Complex. The Great Danes took the opener 3-2.Â
In the seven-inning Game 2, Wegmann struck out at least one batter in each of the first six innings and BU timed its only two hits to perfection.Â
In the fourth inning, senior center fielder
CJ Krowiak led off with a double to the wall in right center. Senior designated hitter
Pat Britt then lifted a 2-2 pitch into the visitors' bullpen in right field for a two-run home run. It was Britt's third home run of the season.
Wegmann (W, 3-5) made those runs stand up. He struck out two in the sixth inning and then worked around a two-on, one-out jam in the seventh to close out his second complete game of the spring. In the seventh, Albany combined a one-out walk with a single to put the tying run on first. The next batter hit a hard comebacker up the middle but Wegmann knocked it down and got the force at second. With two runners still on, he induced an infield pop-up to end it.
In the opener, BU nearly rallied from a 3-0 hole before an outstanding catch near the wall in right center with two runners on saved the game for the Great Danes.Â
Albany scored a run in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth to build a three-run cushion.Â
The Bearcats got on the board in the seventh, thanks to two walks and a wild pitch. Then with one out in the ninth, senior first baseman
Luke Tevlin beat out a grounder to third to get things going. Freshman pinch hitter
Shane Marshall was hit by pitch and sophomore third baseman
Justin Drpich walked to load the bases with one out. Sophomore second baseman
Alex Baratta plated a run on a sacrifice fly to center, bringing the Bearcats within a run, down 3-2. With the tying run on second and the winning run on first, sophomore left fielder
Daniel Franchi jumped on a pitch and sent it to the gap in right center. But the Albany right fielder raced toward the wall and tracked it down for the final out of the game.Â
Binghamton was outhit 7-4.
Junior reliever
Robert Brown pitched 3.0 scoreless innings of one-hit ball in relief of junior starter
Nick Gallagher (L, 2-5). Brown and Gallagher each struck out four.Â
The teams will play the rubber game of the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
