VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Albany (17-16, 7-8 America East) snapped a 4-4 tie with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings and pinned a 6-4 setback on Binghamton baseball (10-22-1, 6-9 AE) Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Complex.
Down 6-4 in the ninth, BU put the tying run on base with two outs but a fly ball to center field ended it. Sophomore third baseman
Justin Drpich hit a one-out double and after a hard ground ball out, senior center fielder
CJ Krowiak was hit by pitch, putting runners on first and second for No. 3 hitter
Jason Agresti. But Agresti's fly ball to shallow center was caught to end the game.
The Bearcats jumped ahead 3-0 with three runs in the first inning. A leadoff walk by junior right fielder
Anthony Meduri, Krowiak hit-by-pitch and Agresti single set the table for senior shortstop
Paul Rufo, who belted a 3-2 pitch into right center for a two-run double. Senior first baseman
Luke Tevlin followed with a sacrifice fly to center to give BU a 3-0 lead.
The teams then played four scoreless innings before the Great Danes struck for four runs on five hits in the top of the sixth. Senior starter
Jacob Wloczewski was the victim of two tough plays in the frame. After a leadoff double and single put runners on first and third, Wloczewski got a called strikeout and then what appeared to be a double-play ball to get out of the jam. But the 3-6-3 play was called safe at first and the run scored to make it 3-1. The next hitter lofted a shallow ball to center field that was lost in the sun for an RBI double. Wloczewski exited and Albany used two walks and a two-out, two-run single to take the lead 4-3. Another run was saved when sophomore left fielder
Daniel Franchi threw out a runner at the plate for the final out.
Binghamton tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth. Franchi led off with a sharp single through the right side and went to second on a stolen base. He tagged and went to third on a fly ball to right field off the bat of sophomore catcher
TJ Wegmann and scored on an RBI infield single by freshman second baseman
Jake Evans. But a double play grounder to second ended the rally.
In the eighth, Albany made BU pay for a leadoff hit batter. After a sacrifice bunt and strikeout, the Great Danes delivered a two-out, RBI single through the right side to forge ahead 5-4. Albany tacked on another run in the top of the ninth on a one-out triple and sacrifice fly to shallow left field.
Krowiak went 2-for-2 with two singles, two hit-by-pitches and a sacrifice. Meduri went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Rufo bumped up his team-high RBI count to 20 with the pair of runs driven in.
The Bearcats next host Cornell at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
