LOWELL, Mass. – Kaysee Talic scattered one run on six hits and struck out nine batters, leading UMass Lowell (15-22, 9-2 AE) to a 6-1 win over Binghamton (11-20, 4-7) in an America East softball game on Sunday afternoon at River View Field. With the victory, the River Hawks sweep the three-game conference series from the Bearcats.
The Bearcats stayed within striking distance of UMass Lowell for most of the game, but three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and an insurance run in the sixth inning blew the game open. Offensively, the Bearcats left eight runners on base.
UMass Lowell got single runs in the second and fourth inning but the Bearcats broke the shutout in the top of the fifth inning. Senior outfielder
Jessica Rutherford, who reached base on an error, scored on a second error three batters later. Binghamton, however, left the bases loaded at the end of the frame.
The River Hawks scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs.
Madison Alcorn led the River Hawks at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Talic is now 4-14 while sophomore pitcher
Rayn Gibson dropped to 5-9 with the loss.
Up next for the Bearcats is a single game at Syracuse on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
