VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Stony Brook limited Binghamton baseball to a combined one run on nine hits over 16 innings and the Seawolves (23-18, 9-8 America East) swept a twinbill from the Bearcats (10-25-1, 6-11 AE), 5-0 and 3-1 Saturday afternoon at the Baseball Complex. The teams will finish the three-game series with a single game at 11 a.m. Sunday.
In the opener, junior pitcher
Nick Gallagher matched his career high with eight strikeouts (with no walks) and allowed just one earned run over 6.2 innings but BU could only muster three hits in the loss.Â
Stony Brook scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings and then broke the game open with three runs in the ninth. They collected 12 hits.Â
In Game 2, Stony Brook scored single runs in the first, sixth and seventh innings for the 3-1 win.Â
Senior starter
Nick Wegmann struck out five and scattered eight hits and two runs in 5.2 innings. Three of BU's six hits were doubles but the Bearcats couldn't come up with the timely hit.
Down 1-0, BU's best opportunity to pull ahead came in the fifth inning when sophomore catcher
TJ Wegmann roped a one-out double into the right field bullpen. Freshman second baseman
Jake Evans hit a bunt single to put runners on first and third. With sophomore third baseman
Greg Satriale up, BU attempted a squeeze bunt but Wegmann was thrown out at the plate on a nice fielding play by the Seawolves' pitcher. The next hitter, junior right fielder
Anthony Meduri hit a slow dribbler down the third base line that was swiped aside by the SBU pitcher. Despite the ball sitting on the chalk, it was called foul and the tying run was denied. Meduri proceeded to foul out, leaving two runners stranded.Â
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, senior designated hitter
Jason Agresti doubled off the wall in right field with one out. With two outs, senior first baseman
Luke Tevlin beat out an infield grounder and the subsequent throwing error allowed Agresti to score Binghamton's lone run of the day. A hard liner off the bat of sophomore left fielder
Daniel Franchi was snared by the Stony Brook shortstop, stranding Agresti in scoring position.Â
The Bearcats went down 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game. Â
