Softball Gains Split at Maine

Bearcats win first game 4-1, drop finale 9-8

ORONO, Maine – Senior third baseman Kate Richard drove in four runs as Binghamton (12-22, 5-8 AE) gained a split against Maine (19-20, 8-5 AE) in an America East doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Kessock Field. The Bearcats won the opener 4-1 but the Black Bears rallied for a 9-8 win in the nightcap.

Richard, who singled in a pair of runs in each game, now has a team-best 27 RBI for the season. Senior outfielder Carrie Maniccia and freshman shortstop Mikayla Alvarez each finished the day with two RBI. Alvarez had a double and a home run in the process.

With the Bearcats down 1-0 in the top of the second inning of the first game, Richard singled home a pair of runs. Two innings later, Rutherford double in a run and later scored on a wild pitch.

Sophomore pitcher Rozlyn Price pitched the first six innings to get the win, raising her record to 5-9. Freshman pitcher Chelsea Howard struck out three batters in the seventh inning to nail down her second save of the year.

Annie Kennedy took the loss, dropping her record to 9-5.

Binghamton looked to be in control of the second game, scoring six times in the top of the seventh inning to go up 8-4. Richard had the key hit, with her second two-run single of the day.

Maine, however, regrouped in the bottom of the inning. They took advantage of a pair of Binghamton errors and scored five times to record the walk-off victory.

Molly Flowers improved to 3-6 with the win while sophomore pitcher Rayn Gibson fell to 5-11 with the loss.

Binghamton and Maine conclude their three-game series with a single game on Sunday at 11 a.m.
