Box Score ORONO, Maine – Sophomore pitcher
Rozlyn Price singled home a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning, powering Binghamton (13-22, 6-8 AE) to a 3-1 win over Maine (19-21, 8-5 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday at Kessock Field. With the victory, the Bearcats take two out the three weekend games from the Black Bears for their first-ever series win at Maine.
Price came through with a two-out, two-run single to break open a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth inning. The Black Bears put two runs on in the bottom of the eighth inning but freshman pitcher
Chelsea Howard was able to get out of the jam to preserve the victory.
"I just really liked the way we played today," head coach
Michelle Johnston said. "They are working together as a team and starting to play with confidence. Chelsea and our entire defense did a great job."
Price started at pitcher and allowed only an unearned run through 2.1 innings. Howard came on in relief and pitched 5.2 scoreless innings. She struck out six batters and allowed just four hits, raising her record to 3-2.
Maine's run in the bottom of the third inning came on a Bearcat error. The tables were turned, however, when senior outfielder
Carrie Maniccia scored on a Black Bear error in the top of the sixth inning to deadlock the game.
Binghamton defeated Maine's ace pitcher, Annie Kennedy, for the second day in a row. Her record drops to 9-6.
Senior second baseman Jill Bovitt finished the game 2-for-4.
The Bearcat pitching staff held Maine to a .145 batting average during the three-game series. Price and Howard each made two appearances without surrendering an earned run.
Sophomore catcher
Sara Herskowitz batted a team-best .400 during the series (2-for-5 with a walk). Freshman outfielder
Lauren Martinez was 3-for-9 (.333). Maniccia led the team with three runs scored.
Binghamton hosts Albany in a single game on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
