Former NYS Player of the Year transfers from Bellarmine

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton softball program has announced the signing of Makenzie Cowburn, a transfer pitcher who played for Bellarmine University the past two seasons.

After pitching in a relief role as a freshman for the Knights, Cowburn was a starter during her sophomore season. She was named the Atlantic Sun (ASUN) Conference Pitcher of the Week on March 16, 2026.

Originally from Andover, N.Y., Cowburn was a four-time, first-team All-New York State (NYS) selection at Wellsville Secondary School, from where she graduated in 2024. She was named the 2024 NYS Class B Player of the Year and was the NYS Section V Class B Championship MVP in both 2022 and 2024. In addition, Cowburn was a four-time, first-team All-Greater Rochester honoree and was the All-Greater Rochester Pitcher of the Year in 2024.

During her career at Wellsville, Cowburn set the career program records for wins (50), shutouts (30), strikeouts (733), hits (137) and RBI (104). She also ranks second all time with an 0.72 ERA.

"We are excited to welcome Makenzie back to New York State," head coach Jess Bump said. "Our goal is to continue to bring in some of the best players in New York, and she comes to Binghamton with many achievements from high school as well as experience throwing a lot of innings from her time at Bellarmine. She is a true competitor, has a great mound presence and we feel she will come in and make an immediate impact on our pitching staff."

Binghamton is the two-time defending America East champions. The Bearcats have also won the 2024 and 2025 regular-season conference crowns and have earned a berth in the last two NCAA Tournaments.
