Baseball loses at Maine 6-1

Tevlin goes 2-for-4 with RBI; Van Scoter pitches 4.2 innings of 1-hit ball in defeat

ORONO, Maine - Host Maine held Binghamton baseball in check with a five-hitter and the Black Bears (14-29, 8-10 America East) used a four-run third inning to pull away for a 6-1 win over the Bearcats (14-27-1, 8-13 AE) Sunday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond.

The Bearcats couldn't capitalize on a two-on, no-out opportunity in the first inning and then Maine cashed in on a leadoff triple in their half of the first to take the lead. In the third inning, the hosts tacked on four runs on four hits to push their lead to 5-0. Two singles, a double and a two-run home run did the damage.

In the sixth, BU got on the board when junior outfielder Anthony Meduri reached on an infield error. Senior catcher Jason Agresti singled and senior first baseman Luke Tevlin stroked an RBI double to left field, scoring Meduri and making it 5-1. But an ensuing grounder turned into a putout at the plate and then a strikeout ended the threat with two runners stranded.

The Bearcats got nothing the rest of the way and Maine added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to complete the scoring.

Freshman reliever Reid VanScoter was a bright spot. The first-year lefty went 4.2 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts.

Tevlin went 2-for-4 with an RBI. For the second straight game, he was the lone Bearcat with two hits.

Binghamton has one America East series remaining (next weekend vs. UMBC) and will need a dramatic move up in the standings to avoid missing the conference tournament. The top six teams advance and BU is in seventh, 1.5 games behind Maine (8-10) and Albany (8-10) with each foe holding the tiebreak advantage over the Bearcats.

But first, BU will travel to Loudonville for a Tuesday twinbill at Siena.
