Baseball sweeps DH over Siena 9-1 and 10-0

Bearcats outhit hosts 24-5, have now won six of last eight games

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (16-27-1) pounded Siena pitching for 19 runs on 24 hits and swept a doubleheader 9-1 and 10-0 Tuesday afternoon at Siena Field. The Bearcats scored five runs in the first three innings of each game to pull away early from a Saints (15-30) team that is a regular contender in the MAAC. Binghamton has now won six of its last eight games.

In the opener, BU broke out the bats early with two runs in the first inning and three more in the third. Up 5-0, the Bearcats added a four-spot in the sixth before settling on the 9-1 final.

Senior catcher Jason Agresti drove in four runs in his first two at-bats - a two-run single in the first inning to give BU the quick lead - and then a two-run double just inside the third-base bag in the third inning to highlight that outburst. Agresti went 2-for-4 with a season-high four RBI.

Senior shortstop Paul Rufo went 3-for-4 with three RBI. He delivered an RBI double to right center in the third inning and then belted a two-out, two-run double to the wall in center field in the sixth to put BU up 7-0.

Senior designated hitter Pat Britt went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the sixth inning.

The offensive production was more than enough for sophomore starter Ben Anderson (W, 2-2), who worked 5.0 effortless innings, facing the minimum 15 batters. Anderson allowed only a fourth-inning single and that runner was erased on one of three double plays that BU's infield turned. Anderson struck out one and lowered his season ERA to 1.71 after his longest collegiate outing.

Game 2 was much of the same. The Bearcats scored three runs in the first - the first on an error and then an RBI groundout by junior outfielder Anthony Meduri followed by an RBI single from freshman first baseman Shane Marshall. In the second inning, sophomore catcher TJ Wegmann made it 4-0 with an RB double to right center. One inning later, Marshall singled, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball to make it 5-0.

Binghamton added two runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Marshall and junior outfielder Sean Trenholm. Then in the sixth, BU finished its scoring with three more runs. Freshman designated hitter Sam Freedman hit a two-run single through the right side and the final run scored on a groundout from sophomore second baseman Alex Baratta.

Marshall went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Trenholm went 2-for-3 with an RBI and junior first baseman Matt Tsukroff went 3-for-4. Wegmann went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Freedman went 1-for-1 with two RBI.

Senior Joe Orlando (W, 2-1) allowed three singles in 4.0 scoreless innings before sophomore Jake Miller and senior Jake Erhard finished off the shutout.

Binghamton plays its final conference series of the season this weekend when it hosts UMBC at the Baseball Complex. The Bearcats likely need to win at least two games and then receive some help next weekend to move up into a top-six playoff spot. The teams will play a twinbill at noon on Saturday and finish with a single game on Sunday. Before Saturday's Game 1, BU will honor its nine seniors.
