Volleyball drops a pair of matches Friday

Binghamton fell to Cleveland State 3-1 and Canisius 3-1

CLEVELAND, OH. - The Binghamton volleyball team (0-2) dropped a pair of matches at the Cleveland State Invitational on Friday. Binghamton was defeated by Cleveland State (1-0) 3-1 in the first match and lost  the second match to Canisius (1-1) 3-1.

Binghamton fell to Cleveland State (25-22, 25-17, 25-15 and 25-12) in the first match of the season. Erin Shultz lead the Bearcats with 13 kills for a .286 hitting percentage. She also recorded 16 digs. Gaby Alicea added 12 kills and 17 digs. Freshman Kiara Adams posted 30 assists in her college debut.

Binghamton took an early 7-2 lead over Cleveland State in the first set but the Vikings battled back to take a 19-18 lead and eventually win the set 25-22.

In the second set, the Bearcats were again able to get out an early lead. This time they held on and won the set 25-17 to tie the match 1-1.

Cleveland State came back from the break strong and won the final two sets, 25-15 and 25-12 to win the match 3-1.

In the second match of the day, Binghamton fell to Canisius, 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 25-15 and 26-14). Alicea led the Bearcats with 20 kills, just two shy of her career high. Shultz added 16 kills and 12 digs while Samantha Gioiosa posted 22 digs. Kiara Adams had 30 assists.

Canisius took a quick lead in the first set and held to take the first game 1-0. The Golden Griffs also claimed the second set, 25-17.

Binghamton changed gears in the third and came out strong taking an 11-7 lead. Binghamton continued to maintain control and win the set 25-15.

It was a back-and-forth battle between both teams in the fourth set. Binghamton took a lead 21-19 lead late in the game, but Canisius hung strong. The Bearcats increased their lead to 23-20 but it wasn't enough to hold off the Golden Griffs. Canisius ended up taking the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.

Binghamton is back in action tomorrow at 11 a.m. when they take on Montana State to close out the Cleveland State Invitational.
