VESTAL, N.Y, - Senior forward
Kayla Saager scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute to lift Binghamton women's soccer (2-1-1) to a 1-0 win over visiting Iona (1-3) Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.Â
Saager was the recipient of an errant clear deep in the box by an Iona defender and the reigning America East Player of the Year made no mistake, ripping a 14-yard right-footed shot into the nearside upper 90. The play came on the heels of some nice work down the right side by freshman
Stefania Piantadosi, who went endline with a strong dribble before sending a ball toward goal. The Gaels' defender attempted to clear it away from danger but sent it directly to Saager instead. She now has three goals and eight points in four games this fall.
Binghamton held a 14-4 shots advantage and controlled play throughout.Â
Freshman
Haylee Poltorak and sophomore
Mackenzie Hanna split the shutout in goal. Poltorak made two saves in the first half and Hanna wasn't tested in the final 45 minutes.Â
In the first half, BU held an 8-2 shots cushion and generated a handful of opportunities inside the box. One of the best was a blast just over the bar by sophomore forward
Essie Bonney with just over six minutes remaining in the period. Bonnie spun around a defender on the left and let loose a hard drive.
Â
Binghamton leads the all-time series 6-1-1 and has posted four consecutive victories.
Â
Binghamton next begins a stretch of three straight road games with a Friday afternoon contest at St. Francis in Loretto, Pa.
