Men’s Soccer Ties No. 18 Colgate 1-1

Brkovic nets game-tying goal in 75th minute

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior forward Haris Brkovic scored the game-tying goal in the 75th minute as Binghamton (1-4-2) played to a 1-1 draw against No. 18 Colgate (3-1-2) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Friday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The deadlock is the Bearcats' fifth all-time against a ranked NCAA Division I team and gives them a 1-1-2 record in their past four matches.

With the Bearcats down 1-0, Brkovic took advantage of a loose ball just outside the box. He then fired it into the upper right-hand corner of the net for his second goal of the season.

Binghamton controlled play in the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Raiders 10-2. The Bearcats had two shots from close range in the final minute of the half but were unable to find the back of the net.

Just five minutes into the second half, Kentaro Morrison took a pass from Kian Alberto and broke in behind the Bearcat defense. He then got past redshirt goalkeeper Chris Shutler and finished the play with his first goal of the year.

In the second sudden-death overtime period, however, it was Shutler that came up with the big play. The current America East Defensive Player of the Week stopped a close range shot from Freddy Jonsson, who was stationed directly in front of the goal. The play came in the 107th minute and preserved the 1-1 tie.

"The spirit of our team was pretty good tonight," head coach Paul Marco said. "The quality of soccer from both teams was very good. We are a little disappointed that we did not get a result tonight but in the end, Colgate could have stolen it from us. They are a very good team."
Binghamton out shot the Raiders 16-7 for the game.

The match against Colgate marked the fourth time a nationally-ranked Division I men's soccer opponent has visited the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats are 1-0-3 in those games. Most recently, Binghamton tied then No. 16 UMBC 1-1 on Oct. 7, 2017 in its annual Homecoming Game.

Brkovic is now tied with senior midfielder Connor McKnight for the team lead in goals and total points (four).

Binghamton heads to George Washington for a Tuesday afternoon game at 2 p.m.

NOTE: Colgate's No. 18 ranking is in the College Soccer News Top 30 poll. The Raiders are also receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll … Binghamton has five wins all time against nationally-ranked Division I opponents. Most recently, the Bearcats beat then No. 28 Ohio State 1-0 on August 30, 2015.
