Men’s Soccer Loses 3-2 in overtime at George Washington

Colonials net game-winning goal 1:10 into first sudden-death period

WASHINGTON D.C. – Oscar Haynes Brown scored 1:10 into the first overtime period as George Washington (4-3-0) rallied for a 3-2 win over Binghamton (1-5-2) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Tuesday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field. The game marked the fourth time this season that the Bearcats have played in an overtime contest.

Binghamton started off strong with a pair of goals in the opening eight minutes. In the fifth minute, junior forward Haris Brkovic netted his third goal of the year, which was assisted by sophomore back Chris Stamper. Three minutes later, sophomore midfielder Noah Luescher scored his first goal of the season, which was assisted by senior midfielder Connor McKnight.

Heading into the last 30 minutes of regulation, Binghamton appeared firmly in control of the match. They held a 10-3 shot advantage, with none of the Colonial shots coming on goal.

Things began to unravel, however, when Dylan Lightbourn slashed the lead to 2-1 in the 69 minute. Eleven minutes later, Marcelo Lage tied the match at 2-2.

In the final nine minutes of regulation, the Colonials fired three shots on goal. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Chris Shutler, however, saved all of them to force overtime.

"We were outstanding in the first half," head coach Paul Marco said. "We played as well as we have in a long time. But late in the game, we made a mistake on the first (GW) goal and that let them back in the game. From there, they (GW) took over the game. They are a good team but we are very disappointed that we couldn't finish what we started."

George Washington ended up with a 15-12 advantage in shots.

Shutler finished with six saves – all in the second half.

Brkovic, who has scored in back-to-back games, now leads the Bearcats with six total points. McKnight has five points (two goals and an assist) while Luescher has four points (one goal, two assists).

Binghamton returns home for its America East opener against Hartford on Saturday at 7 p.m.
