Volleyball travels to Albany Friday

Bearcats and Great Danes first serve set for 7 p.m. in Albany

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton volleyball team (3-11, 1-0 AE) will travel to Albany to face the Great Danes (6-7, 0-0 AE) on Friday evening. The America East matchup is slated for a 7 p.m. start.

Bearcats take first conference match of 2018
Binghamton defeated UMBC in five sets last Friday in the first America East contest of the season. The Bearcats dominated the first two sets and then dropped the third and fourth but came back to win the match with a 15-13 fifth set victory. Gaby Alicea lead Binghamton with 15 kills and 18 digs while Erin Shultz added 11 kills and 14 digs. Freshman setter Kiara Adams recorded a new career-high 38 assists in the match.

For the season, Alicea leads the Bearcats with 192 points on 170 kills. Shultz has posted 133 kills and Samantha Gioiosa leads the team with 170 digs. Redshirt senior Lexi LaGoy ranks first with 36 total blocks.

Scouting the Great Danes
This Friday's contest will mark the first AE match for the Great Danes. Last weekend Albany defeated Siena in straight sets. The Great Danes hit .393 as a team and Nicole Otero posted a season-best 25 digs. Grace Cozad lead Albany with a career-best 13 kills.

For the season, Akubata Okenwaleads the team with 129 kills for a 2.80 kills per set average. 2017 America East Defensive Player of the Year, Nicole Otero, ranks first on the squad with 219 digs. As a team, the Great Danes are averaging 11.3 kills per set for a .178 hitting percentage.

The last meeting
The Great Danes claimed both matches between the two teams in 2017. Winning 3-1 in Albany and 3-0 in Vestal. The previous year the two teams split their matches.

Next up
Binghamton will host UMass Lowell and UNH next weekend during Binghamton Univesity's Homecoming. The Bearcats host the Riverhawks at 7 p.m. on Friday and the Wildcats at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
