VESTAL, N.Y. – Sophomore forward
Genna Michitti tapped in a goalmouth cross from senior forward
Kayla Saager in the 17
th minute and that's all Binghamton women's soccer (7-4-2, 2-1 America East) needed in a 1-0 win over Maine (5-5-1, 1-2 AE) Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
On the scoring play, sophomore forward
Sarah Dibble sent a ball toward goal and a Maine defender attempted to clear but her kick went straight to Saager. The conference points leader quickly cut a right-footed pass into the middle, where Michitti finished behind the Black Bears keeper. It was Michitti's second goal of the season and Saager's assist raised her points total to 22 in 13 games this season.Â
Â
With the win, BU improved to 6-0 at home, where they have outscored opponents 10-0.Â
"I thought our first half performance was very good," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "Our movement was good, we created quality chances, including Genna's goal ... and I thought it was a deserved score at the half. The second half was scrappy and we needed to manage the game better ... but I'm very pleased with the result. We were able to grind it out and any time you can get three points in this competitive conference, we will take it."
Binghamton held a 12-8 shots advantage and had several chances to extend its lead before the Black Bears created some anxious moments down the stretch with late pressure.Â
Freshman keeper
Haylee Poltorak needed to make just two saves to register her fourth shutout of the season. In the process she lowered her season goals against average to 0.56. The Bearcats have posted five shutouts in their last six games.

Binghamton next plays at Stony Brook Thursday night.
