Men’s Soccer rallies for 2-1 win at Lehigh

McKnight and McDonnell net second-half goals

BETHELEHM, Pa. – Freshman forward Andrew McDonnell scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute, lifting Binghamton (1-3-1) to a 2-1 win at Lehigh (2-3-0) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Friday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats have now gone 1-0-1 in their last two matches after struggling in their previous three outings.

McDonnell's goal, which was the first of his career, came off a corner kick. Sophomore midfielder Noah Luescher fired the ball towards the net in traffic and McDonnell was able to finish the play.

"I am really happy for our team tonight," head coach Paul Marco said. "We were down early tonight and didn't play well during that time but we were able to regroup and finish the game quite well. We got two great goals tonight and this win is something for us to build on."

Binghamton fell behind quickly when Oscar Greene scored for Lehigh in just the second minute of the game. The Bearcats eventually settled down, but were outshot 12-4 in the first half and did not have a shot on goal.

That all changed when senior midfielder Connor McKnight tied the game in the 61st minute. He fired a shot from outside the box into the upper-right corner of the net. It was his team-best second goal of the season and set the stage for McDonnell's heroics just over 20 minutes later.

Lehigh finished with a 17-10 shot advantage but the Bearcats held a 6-5 edge in the second half.

In goal, redshirt junior Chris Shutler made four saves. He has surrendered just one goal in his last 210 minutes of play.

Binghamton heads to Columbia on Monday for a 7 p.m. game.

NOTES: Luescher now has a team-best two assists so far this season … the victory was Binghamton's first ever against Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks held a 1-0-1 advantage in the series heading into tonight's match.
