BALTIMORE, Md. – UMBC used a 9-0 run early in the second half to build a double-digit lead and the host Retrievers (10-9, 2-2 America East) pinned a 68-49 loss on Binghamton men's basketball (5-13, 1-2 America East) Wednesday night at the Event Center.
Down eight at half, BU scored on its first possession of the second half to pull within six but UMBC responded with a 9-0 run to forge ahead 40-25 with 13:48 left. The Bearcats couldn't pull it back to single digits the rest of the way.
"We're struggling offensively right now," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "We keep leaning on our defense but that can't hold up all night. We have to start making shots. But we will keep grinding."

Sam Sessoms scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half and senior forward
Caleb Stewart led the team with a career-high tying 16 points – 13 of which came in the first half. Stewart added seven rebounds.
Stewart was sizzling from the opening whistle. He hit 5-of-7 for 13 points before being sent to the bench late in the first half after picking up his third foul. The Bearcats led 15-14 with 11:40 left before UMBC went on a 17-5 run to build a 31-20 cushion with 1:25 left. A three-pointer from senior guard
J.C. Show with 41 seconds left brought BU back to within single digits at the break, down 31-23.
Binghamton next plays at Vermont on Saturday in Burlington.
