Women's soccer upended at Maine 3-1

Dibble scores in 8th minute but Black Bears rally with three straight; Hanna makes 11 saves

ORONO, Maine - Host Maine (5-5-1, 1-3-1 America East) scored three straight goals to offset an early tally and pinned a 3-1 defeat on Binghamton women's soccer (8-4-2, 2-2-1 AE) Sunday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond. The win snapped BU's six-game unbeaten streak against the Black Bears.

Junior forward Sarah Dibble gave the Bearcats a quick lead with a goal in the eighth minute. Classmate Dora Hayes fed a ball into the middle, where Dibble spun and ripped an initial shot that was saved by the Maine keeper. But Dibble pounced on the rebound and tucked away a left-footed tally for her second goal of the season.

But Maine answered in the 38th minute on a breakaway. The Bearcats needed two strong defensive plays to keep it level at half. Freshman midfielder Olivia McKnight blocked a point-blank shot with just under six minutes left and less than 30 seconds later, senior back Lauren Spinnato cleared a ball off the line with a header.

In the second half, Dibble just missed striking again, but her chance on the left side of the six-yard box was stopped by the Black Bears keeper in the 61st minute.

Maine scored the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute and added an insurance goal in the 85th minute. The winning goal was an open far-post header off a corner kick. On the previous play, junior keeper Mackenzie Hanna came out to make a foot save on a Maine break. But the Black Bears cashed in on the ensuing corner.

Hanna made a career-high 11 saves - the most for any BU keeper in three seasons.

Binghamton was outshot 19-11, but generated nine corner kicks and two dangerous free kicks just outside the box.

The Bearcats next host Hartford at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
