STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Junior midfielder
Noah Luescher netted the game-winning goal on a free kick in the 82nd minute, leading Binghamton (4-7-1, 1-3-0 AE) to a 3-2 win over Stony Brook (3-9-2, 0-4-0 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday night at LaValle Stadium. The Bearcats trailed 2-0 with 26 minutes left in regulation but staged a furious rally to pull out the victory.
Luescher finished the game with a goal and an assist. He now leads Binghamton with a career-high five goals, two assists and 12 total points so far this season. His goal against the Seawolves was his second game winner of the season.
The other hero in the Bearcats' comeback was freshman forward
Oliver Svalander, who scored the Bearcats' first two goals. He scored them in the 64th and 68th minutes to deadlock the match at 2-2. They represented the first two goals of his collegiate career.
"I really thought that we came out strong in the second half," head coach
Paul Marco said. "We were very good with the ball. Noah and Oliver were outstanding in the second half. They found each other on the attack and moved the ball quite well. We found out tonight what our grit is like. We showed determination and fight."
Despite outshooting Stony Brook 4-2 during the first half, the Bearcats fell behind 2-0 at the break. The first score was an own goal in the 19th minute and the second goal was netted by Mark Irvine in the 31st minute.
Svalander's first goal came from close range and was assisted by Luescher. He then tied the match on a shot from 10 yards out. Junior midfielder
Lucas Arzan was credited with the assist.
Binghamton finished with a 14-6 shot advantage and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal.
The last time Binghamton rallied from two goals down for a victory also came at Stony Brook in the 2015 America East quarterfinals. Pascal Trappe scored the game-winning goal in the overtime.
The Bearcats travel to Bucknell on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
NOTE: Svalander is the third Binghamton player to score twice in a game this season. He joins Luescher (against Drexel on Aug. 30) and freshman forward
Ethan Homler (against Columbia on Oct. 8).
