VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman
Dan Mansfield scored in the 67th minute, lifting Binghamton (5-7-2, 2-3-0 AE) to a 1-0 win over UMBC (5-8-1, 0-4-1 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats are now 3-1-1 in their last five matches.
Mansfield's goal, which was his second of the season, was set up when freshman forward
Oliver Svalander broke free down the left sideline. He made a long pass to fellow freshman forward Ethan Holmer, who was stationed inside the box. Rather than shoot, Homler tapped the ball back to Mansfield, who then fired it into the net.
From there, the Bearcat defense preserved the victory. Redshirt freshman
P.J. Parker made a career-high seven saves to record his first solo shutout. Two of his saves, both off hard shots, came in the final five minutes of regulation.
"What a terrific match," head coach
Paul Marco said. "It was very tightly played and for a while, I thought it was going to end in a 0-0 tie. I am delighted that we got the result against a really good team."
Svalander and Homler each recorded their first assists of the season. Both of them now have five total points this season (which includes two goals). Svalander has recorded all five of his points in the past three games.
Binghamton heads to Hofstra on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
NOTES: Prior to the match, Binghamton honored
Haris Brkovich and
Stephen McKenna during their annual Senior Day Ceremony … the Bearcats are now 4-2-1 at home this season.
